RAKU FAQ

QUESTIONS ABOUT PLANS, KITS AND BUILD METHODS

Q

Do I have to use a DuFLEX kit? Can I just purchase plans and build with my own materials and methods?

A

Yes, by all means. We've configured the plans for Raku around the Duflex build system to save build time and provide a ready made laminate with known mechanical properties and panels already cut to the exact required shape. The DuFLEX kit system also provides us with a uniform build methodology to use as a framework for builder support.

Other build methods may require changes to the plans and/or the cutting files. For example if you want to strip plank the topsides you will need frame definitions that are not required for the DuFLEX kit. Female mould frames require different offsets to male mould frames.

To ensure the plans are going to work for you please contact us to discuss and we will provide you with a quote for the plans valid for 30 days.

Q.

What sort of support will I get throughout the build project?

A.

We will be building a comprehensive guide to the construction process which will include drawings, renderings, photos and building tips. We are also available seven days a week for questions by email and Skype (by arrangement). We normally respond within 24 hours, often within an hour if it's in our working hours, and very rarely more than 48 hours.

Ordering and paying for plans and kits.

Q.

How do I order the plans?

A.

We will provide you with a quote for the kit and/or plans valid for 30 days. We require a 50% deposit on order. The remainder is payable when the kit and/or plans are ready for delivery. Plans can be delivered almost immediately if they have already been completed. Time to have a kit ready for delivery is normally three to four weeks but can be up to six weeks if the factory is busy.

Q.

How do I make the payment.?

A.

We will provide you with payment details on request. You can pay by wire transfer or Paypal. Our pricing is in US dollars but if you want to pay in another currency we can make a conversion that will be valid if paid within 48 hours.

Changes to the design

Q.

Can I make changes to the design myself?

A.

We've put in a lot of effort to provide a range of designs with a range of options to cater for a broad range of personal preferences in a performance cruising cat. We prefer you don't make any changes without asking us first. If you make changes we do not approve of we reserve the right to disallow you from referring to the boat as a "Grainger Design" and this may cause problems for you when it comes time to sell.

Q.

Can I have a cabin with full standing headroom in the Raku 30?

A.

No. If you need full standing headroom there are two options.

1. Put a pop top in the roof. This may require additional engineering.

2. Build the Raku 40.

Q.

Can I build the boat in compliance with ISO standards if I need CE compliance?

A.

Yes you can. We can supply a set of plans and specifications engineered to ISO standards (or engineering to first principles where there is no applicable standard) for CE compliance. There is an additional charge for the plans and the kit.

Kit Inclusions and Exclusions

Over time various manufacturers will be making professionally manufactured components available for some or all of the boats in the Raku range. These components might include hull shoes, dagger boards and cases, rudders, forebeam and longeron. Where these components are available from third party suppliers the materials will be excluded from the basic kit and the materials will be supplied as separate modules.

For now the materials for the hull shoes, dagger boards and cases (or mini keels) are included in the kit. The longeron is not included.

Q

What's included in the Kit?

A.

The kit includes temporary mould frames, strong back, hull support cradles, material to strip plank the hull shoes and all of the panels required to build the composite structure including bulkheads, cabin soles, and berths. The kit includes the mini keels or the dagger cases, whichever option you select. Each option takes up a similar amount of material in the kit.

Q

What is not included?

A.

Material to build the longeron is not included. This is a critical component of the rig, it needs to be built under controlled conditions in carbon and we prefer these be supplied by a reputable rigging company. Plans for the forebeam are available and we can configure the kit so you have enough material to build the forebeam.

Q.

What about the furniture in the saloon?

A.

This is not included because the design will vary from one boat to another depending on the width of the door at the companionway and personal preferences in the layout. Over time we will provide a range of modules which can be ordered as plain sheet or a CNC kit to your exact requirements in your preferred material The plain sheet option is preferred if you are not sure about your layout at the time of purchase.

Q.

Will I  have enough resin and powders in the kit to complete the project?

A.

Possibly not. The quantities required vary considerabley from one builder to another and so we have to do a certain amount of best guessing based on calculations and experience with previous projects. Over time the quantities will be revised as we get feedback from builders.

Disclaimer

The Raku designs are built on concepts, materials and methods we have been working with for nearly twenty years, however with the new designs on these pages we intend to take the concept to a new level with more focus on design options and builder support. In that regard the Raku project is very much a work in progress, so please excuse us if we make changes to the details on this pages and other pages.

At all times our motivation is to provide solutions that work in the interest of you the customer, the builder, the sailor. We welcome your questions and your input at any time on any topic related to the Raku cats.
